The Best Christmas Present Is Our Presence: Advent Day Nineteen 19/12/24

Welcome to Day 19 of our Advent devotional journey, today we explore a profound truth: the most precious 'present' we can offer during this Christmas season isn't wrapped in glittering paper – it's the gift of our presence. As we approach the final days of Advent, let's reflect on how being truly present for others mirrors Christ's own incarnation, where God chose to be physically present among us.

In our increasingly digital world, where screens mediate most of our daily interactions – from education to commerce, from communication to entertainment – there's a growing hunger for authentic human connection. The post-pandemic era has taught us a powerful lesson: whilst technology connects us virtually, it's the warmth of physical presence, the power of undivided attention, and the grace of being truly "there" for others that nurtures our souls.

Scripture reminds us that God's greatest gift to humanity was His presence among us through Christ's incarnation. This divine example shows us that being present isn't just about physical proximity – it's about bringing our whole selves to each encounter, just as Christ did in His ministry.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten Son from the Father (John 1:14).

And as Jesus taught in Matthew 28:20:

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

This reassuring promise reminds us that Christ's presence with humanity is constant and unwavering - a perfect model of dedication and love. When we choose to be fully present with others, we reflect this divine commitment to companionship and care.

Think about it like this: Just as Jesus came down from Heaven to be with us on Earth, showing His love by spending time with people, we can show our love by being there for others. When you're scrolling tiktok, playing video games or Snapchatting friends, it's easy to forget about spending real face-to-face time with people. But just like how special it feels when someone gives you their full attention - really listening to you and caring about what you say - we can give that same special gift to others.

Remember how Jesus always made time for people? He would stop to talk to children, have dinner with his friends, and comfort those who were sad. We can do the same! Whether it's putting down our phones to talk with our family, spending quality time with friends, or visiting our neighbours who might be lonely, these moments of being truly present are precious gifts we can give.

Making It Real: Practical Steps

To embody the gift of presence this season:

  • Practise active listening in conversations
  • Put away devices during family gatherings
  • Create intentional spaces for one-on-one time with loved ones
  • Be fully present in moments of celebration and quiet reflection

Today's Reflection

Consider these questions as you reflect on today's theme:

  • How often do you give others your undivided attention?
  • How can you be more present during the remainder of this Advent season?
  • Who in your life might need the gift of your presence right now?

Finding Your Own Path

Remember that being present looks different for everyone. Find ways to authentically connect that align with your personality and circumstances.

Prayer

Lord, help us to be truly present with those around us this season. Guide us in offering the gift of our authentic presence, just as You came to be present among us. Grant us the grace to see and respond to the needs of others with our whole hearts. Amen.

Your Personal Invitation

Today, choose one person in your life and give them the gift of your undivided attention and presence. Put away distractions and truly listen to their story, their hopes, or their concerns.

God bless,
