Our Holy Companions: Advent Day Fourteen 14/12/24

As we reach the end of Advent's second week, let's explore three special saints whose feast days fall during this season. Their lives offer wisdom and inspiration for our own spiritual journey: Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucy, and St. John of the Cross.

Our Lady of Guadalupe - December 12

In 1531, Mary appeared to Juan Diego near Mexico City. The miraculous image she left on his cloak still inspires millions of people today across the Americas and the rest of the world.

Her loving words to Juan Diego - "Am I not here, I, who am your Mother?" - remind us that she watches over us always. During Advent, this motherly care is especially meaningful as we prepare for Jesus' birth, just as Mary carried Him during the first Advent.

St. Lucy - December 13

Lucy was a brave young woman from Syracuse, Sicily in the 4th century. Though born into a wealthy family, she chose to dedicate her life to God and gave her dowry to help the poor. She stayed true to her faith even when faced with persecution, refusing to give up her beliefs until her death.

Lucy's name means "light," and her wisdom shines through her saying: "Those whose hearts are pure are temples of the Holy Spirit." Her life shows us how to be brave in our beliefs, see with our hearts rather than just our eyes, and serve others with love. Whilst Christmas lights sparkle around us during Advent, Lucy reminds us to shine with Christ's inner light. In our world full of distractions, she teaches us to focus on what truly matters and use our resources to help others rather than getting caught up in consumption excess.

St. John of the Cross - December 14

John of the Cross wrote some of his most beautiful spiritual works whilst imprisoned in a tiny cell. Instead of giving up hope, he turned his suffering into a way to grow closer to God, becoming one of the Church's greatest spiritual teachers.

His simple but powerful message - "In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone" - is perfect for Advent reflection. He teaches us that what matters isn't our achievements or appearances, but how much we love. Just as John found God even in his dark prison, we can find God in our own difficulties. He shows us that preparing for Christmas isn't about perfect decorations or presents, but about growing in love like Christ - freely and completely.

Living the Message

These saints show us that Advent isn't just about waiting - it's about actively preparing our hearts through faith, service, and love. They help us look past the shopping and decorating to find what truly matters.

Scripture illuminates our path during this sacred season:

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5)

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

Making It Real: Practical Steps

Try doing one kind act each day until Christmas, following St. Lucy's example. It can be anything from opening a door, or giving a compliment to volunteering.

Today's Reflection

  • How can I prepare my heart, like Mary did, to welcome Jesus?
  • Where do I see God's light in dark times, like St. Lucy did?
  • How can I grow closer to God through challenges, like St. John of the Cross?

Finding Your Own Path

Each saint's story is different. Let their examples inspire you as you develop your own relationship with Christ.

Prayer

Loving Father, through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucy, and St. John of the Cross, help us prepare for Jesus' coming. Give us their faith, courage, and love. Lead us towards Christ's light. Amen.

Your Personal Invitation

Pick one of these Advent saints to be your special guide this week. Read about their life, ask for their prayers, and let their example help you prepare for Jesus' birth.

God bless,
