Finding time for Prayer

Maintaining a consistent prayer life can feel like an impossible challenge in today's fast-paced world. Between early morning lectures, work commitments, and social obligations, finding time for prayer might seem like just another item on an endless to-do list. But what if I told you that just 15 minutes could transform your spiritual life? Let's explore how to make this sacred time a natural part of your daily routine.

Why 15 Minutes?

Fifteen minutes is the sweet spot - it's long enough to have a meaningful conversation with God, yet short enough to fit into even the busiest schedule. Think about it: we spend more time than that scrolling through social media or queuing for coffee! This modest time commitment can yield remarkable spiritual benefits. The Morning Advantage

Whilst you can pray at any time, morning prayer offers unique benefits:

  • Your mind is fresh and less cluttered with daily worries
  • You're setting a spiritual foundation for your entire day
  • There are fewer distractions and interruptions
  • You're less likely to postpone or skip prayer due to unexpected events

Getting Started

Here's a simple morning prayer routine you can try:

  • 5 minutes: Begin with the Sign of the Cross and express gratitude for the new day.
  • I like to start my day with the daily offering prayer, of which there are many verisons of, and you can most certainly make up your own. but here is the traditional one:

O my Jesus,

through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

I offer You my prayers, works,

joys and sufferings

of this day for all the intentions

of Your Sacred Heart,

in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

throughout the world,

in reparation for my sins,

for the intentions of all my relatives and friends,

and in particular

for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Amen.

  • 5 minutes: Read a short Scripture passage or devotional. There are brilliant apps available that provide daily readings, such as Universalis, Hallow, and Ascension. It's wonderful to follow along with the daily Mass readings that Catholics worldwide are sharing!
  • 5 minutes: Share your intentions and listen in silence. If you prefer to write, consider getting a simple notebook to jot down your thoughts. I find writing helps me organise and visualise my prayers. Furthermore, it's a brilliant way to keep track of your prayers, and reflect on them further down the line!

Practical Tips

To make morning prayer a habit:

  • Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier (perhaps gradually, starting with 5 minutes)
  • Keep a prayer journal by your bed
  • Start small - even 5 minutes is better than none
  • Use a prayer app for reminders and structure
  • Create a cosy prayer corner in your room with a comfortable cushion and perhaps a candle

Remember, prayer isn't about perfection—it's about building a relationship with God. Start with these 15 minutes and watch how it transforms your daily life. If you're already doing more than 15 minutes a day, that's brilliant—keep going! But if you're just starting to create a prayer habit, don't feel pressured to begin with long sessions. Fifteen minutes a day is a perfect starting point, and you'll likely find yourself naturally wanting to spend more time in prayer as you grow in your faith journey.

God bless,

Mel
