The Baptism of the Lord
‘When Jesus had been baptised and was praying, the heavens were opened.’
At that time: As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, ‘I baptise you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.’
Now when all the people were baptised by John the Baptist and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’

This pivotal moment in scripture reveals three interconnected spiritual truths:
1. Divine Humility
John the Baptist demonstrates profound humility by directing attention away from himself toward Jesus, declaring himself unworthy even to untie Jesus's sandals. This teaches us that true spiritual leadership always points to Christ.
2. Trinity Revealed
In this sacred moment, we witness a unique manifestation of the Trinity: Jesus in the water, the Holy Spirit descending as a dove, and the Father's voice from heaven. This powerful revelation shows us the perfect unity and harmony of God's nature.

- Practise "holy listening" - take 5 minutes throughout your day (ideally, at the same time each day, whichever works best for you and your routine) to sit in silence, acknowledging God's presence just as Jesus did in prayer
- Notice the "dove moments" - those gentle signs of the Spirit's presence in your daily routine, perhaps in a kind word or moment of peace. These are truly the little things in life that we often overlook and take for granted.
- Embrace your identity as God's beloved child - write down negative self-talk and replace it with truths about your divine worth. (Open your Bible!)
A Personal Prayer
Loving Father, sometimes I forget who I am - Your beloved child. Help me to recognise Your voice amidst life's noise, to embrace the gentle nudges of Your Spirit, and to walk in the confidence of Your love. Like John, may I point others to You with genuine humility. Transform my ordinary moments into encounters with Your extraordinary grace. Amen.
